Asylum is the third level of Painkiller chapter 2 and one of the most memorable levels in the game.

Description[]

This level is set in a small and dark Asylum on a stormy night. The whole building is set somewhere in the woods and the area around the building is pretty spacious. In front of the Asylum is a main gate, pavement with benches and lampposts that lead into the building. Behind the building is a fountain and gazebo with a small bridge above a dried up stream. The gazebo also contains entrance to the underground tunnel that leads into the building. The interior of the building is very dim. There are four floors. The first two are the "cleanest ones" as there's a reception, archives, library, kitchen and even a projection room - however the bathroom is rather filthy. The third floor was converted into patient rooms which are in terrible condition and full of beds, which most of them are turned upside down. The last floor is an attic full of pentagrams and ominous inscriptions on walls. There are also the stairs that lead to the tower.

The tarot card of this level is Fury. To acquire it, the player has to finish the level only using the Painkiller weapon.

Secret	Description	Video
Secret 1	The first secret is located on in the left alcove on the small roof when you stand in front of the building. It is reached by jumping on some extended bricks on the right side. After successfully climbing, jump on the roof in the alcove, and then try to jump to the left alcove by jumping above the main door.	Video
Secret 2	The second secret is located on the arbor like bridge above the dried brook. It is reached by pushing the lamppost onto the roof.	Video
Secret 3	The third secret is located in the locked bedroom on the third floor. It is reached simply by killing all the enemies and then backtracking to the third floor.	Video

Scribbles[]

There are 4 different scribbles on the Asylum's walls. All of them are located in the attic of the Asylum which is by the way the strangest and the most ominous room in the whole building.

The first scribble you will encounter is very clear and readable, spelling "NAAMAH" which is a demon in the Jewish mysticism. It also says that Naamah is one of the Archangel Samael's mate.
The second one is found in the same room which is less clear and readable. By its appearance it may not be in English.
The third one is found in the room where the Freak will rush through the door and is a blood written text accompanied with a Satanic Pentagram. After its appearance it is in another language.
The last one is in the corner of the walls written with an ink like substance instead of blood. And is the most unclear and unreadable of them all. It is still not written in English.

Trivia[]

The Asylum building is based on The Danvers State Hospital - psychiatric hospital, where at the beginning of its existence the patients were kept in poor conditions and cruelly treated.
One of the paintings in Asylum, found in the recreation room is based on Michelangelo's "The Last Judgment" and it features Charon.
There are also paintings on the walls: Landscape with Buildings by Didier Barra, Opening of the Fifth Seal by El Greco, Dull Gret by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and St Anthony the Hermit Tortured by the Devils, Stefano di Giovanni. The painting "Dull Gret" is based on a Dutch parable about a crazy woman who destroys hell, which is similar to the plot of the game. And it is symbolic that the painting about a crazy woman hangs on the walls of the psychiatric hospital.

Secret 1	The first secret is located on top of Holy Mary's sculpture in the front yard of the Asylum. To reach it the plater has to shoot the sculpture in the legs, arms and head with a stakegun to make it turn around.	Video
Secret 2	The second secret is located in the basement area of the crematory building to the left. To reach it the player has to move one of the two barrels in the crematory to the closed door to make it open. The opened door will reveal an open manhole which leads to the basement area.	Video
